Heading the Investigative Unit of the Ethnic Relations Commission is Mr. Alvin Lloyd Smith who has more than 35 years of experience in law enforcement, - primarily in the field of Criminal Investigation.
In 1976, Smith joined the Guyana Police Force as a Junior Officer where he received numerous training for his career development.
He is the holder of a certificate in Criminology from the University of Guyana.
In 1981, he was given the opportunity to travel to the United Kingdom where he completed an Officers’ Course in Criminal Investigation at the West Yorkshire Police Academy, and graduated the ‘best Graduating Student’.
Upon his return to Guyana, Mr. Smith quickly moved up to the rank of Senior Police Officer within the Guyana Police Force. During his tenure as a Senior Officer, he respectively held the post of Commander ‘C’ Division (East Coast Demerara) and Commander ‘B’ Division (Berbice).
Subsequently, it was because of his outstanding leadership in the security sector that he was appointed Head of Presidential Security under the Desmond Hoyte led Administration before taking up the position as Head of CID (Criminal Investigative Department) and Deputy Commissioner of Police ‘Law Enforcement’-GPF.
With some 11 years of faithful service to the Guyana Police Force, Smith retired in 1992. After his sojourn, he decided that he will again venture into the world of work and willingly accepted the post of Security Superintendent at the Omai Gold Mines Limited where he was responsible for managing all Security Operations, Training, Internal Investigations, Planning and Execution of all Gold Escorts.
His other work in the private sector included Security Manager at the Guyana National Industrial Company Inc. and President of the Port Facility Security Officers Association.
During the period 2012-2017, Mr. Smith also served on the Police Service Commission. He is the proud recipient of a Distinguished Service Medal (DSM).
